Fourth grade mathematics instruction will cover the following concepts:
- Place value of whole numbers to 100,000
- Multi-digit multiplication and long division
- Fractions and mixed numbers
- Estimation, factors, and multiples
- Decimals
- Properties of squares and rectangles
- Angles
- Area and perimeter
- Line plots, tables, and graphs
Throughout the year students will be applying their math skills and strategies to solving multi-step word problems. In addition to math knowledge, solving word problems requires a high level of perseverance, attention to detail, and reading comprehension.
Students are expected to be fluent in addition and subtraction facts to 12. By January, students must be fluent in multiplication and division facts to 12. Please help your child to practice math facts at home. There are many online resources available, including (but not limited to):
Frontier Central School District uses the Math in Focus program, which is based on the progression of concrete to pictorial to abstract understanding of mathematics. The program promotes visualization so students “see” math; as a result, it makes more sense to them. The goal is to not only develop basic understanding, but also the ability to apply knowledge to conventional and novel situations.
