Math: Math In Focus- Throughout this program we will cover the following areas: Operations- addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), Numeration- (place value, rounding, estimation), Decimals, Fractions, Geometry, Measurement, Problem Solving & Critical Thinking. Many of the skills and concepts will be taught through a unit of study. Throughout the year we will go back to the previous set of skills to build upon the knowledge learned in the earlier lessons. Skills and concepts will be reviewed throughout the year. Complete mastery of the skills and concepts will be expected toward the end of the year. At the end of each unit there will be a unit test. Flexible grouping will be the focus throughout the year. Students will be placed in various groups to help them to succeed to their fullest potential. Knowing basic addition and subtraction math facts is extremely important. www.IXL.com is a great site to help children to reinforce or extend their knowledge. Students have access to this site at home, as well as in class. Please have your child tell time using a regular clock as much as possible. They need to understand money, so counting change, rolling coins, etc. is beneficial.
Language Arts: Scholastic News, ReadyGen, class books- Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking are the main goals for this year. Your child will need to keep a record of the books they read this year. A minimum of 25 books is the district’s guideline. The AR program keeps a record of all of the books your child reads. Students are expected to earn AR points each month. Students read a book of their choice and then take a test to show comprehension of the material and improvement throughout the year. So READ. READ, READ! Our class will read everything that we can, such as magazines, ReadyGen books, text books, poems, short stories, plays, etc. Students will respond to the information they read through questions, discussions, reports and projects. Students will write about anything and everything! They will be expected to write complete thoughts, using details, interesting language, proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. All assignments will reinforce text structure- description, cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast, sequence of events, author's purpose, story elements, etc. There will be a weekly spelling test. A list for each week will be sent home at the beginning of the week. This list should be glued onto the agenda on Monday morning. If you don't see this list, please ask your child where the list is. We will use flexible groups. There will be an emphasis on organization skills. www.Lexia.com is a wonderful tool that children may access at home or in class.
Science: The students will learn about force and motion, landforms and interdependence between bees and humans. A hands-on approach will be used as much as possible.Social Studies: Our class will use a weekly magazine to learn about our world and current events. While covering social studies topics, we will reinforce language arts skills too. Flexible groups will help children to rise to their fullest potential.Technology: Our class has one-to-one computer access. Students will practice computer skills, reading, math and spelling. The platform of Classlink will be used in class to manage computer safety concerns.
Parties: We would like to have parties for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and the end of the year. A note will be sent home a few weeks before the party asking for contributions. If you are able to contribute, that would be wonderful!
Birthdays: Birthdays are a special time in everyone’s life and should be noted! If your child would like to bring a treat, we would love to eat it! Please be sure to send in everything that you need. For example, if you send in a drink, please send in cups! There are 19 students in the room.
Field Trips: When field trips have been established, you will receive information pertaining to the trip and a permission slip. Students will not be allowed to attend without a signed permission slip. I will need a few parents to chaperone on the trips. As the trips are scheduled, I will give you that information and ask for volunteers.
Homework: Please check your child’s agenda daily in order to be sure that your child is up to date on homework. Homework is expected to be completed to the best of your child’s ability, it should be neat, organized and handed in on time. Please sign your child’s agenda on a daily basis. This ensures that we have a means of consistent communication between home and school. This is an extremely important way to help children develop organizational skills for a lifetime of success. Please expect a math or an ELA assignment each night, Monday through Thursday. Only children who are not up to date with assignments will be given homework to complete over the weekend. Homework/daily reading should take about fifteen minutes to complete.
Behavior: Respectful, attentive behavior is expected at all times, throughout the school building. Parents will be notified by written or oral communication if ever a problem should present itself.
Attendance: Attendance is extremely important. Students not only miss assignments, they miss valuable instruction and guidance. Students will need to make up all missing assignments. Homework may be sent home with another student. Just leave a voice mail message. 926-1760 ex. 6110. You can also e-mail me at: Lcerone@frontiercsd.org Please send in a written excuse when your child returns.
Book Orders: Occasionally, I send home book orders for the children to order from. There will be a due date for all orders. Please make the check out for the book company, not the teacher! The books are a really great deal! You may also order your child’s books online. Look for a direction sheet and class ordering code when the first set of book orders comes home with your child. Access Code: GYCQ7
Questions: I may be reached by calling the office 926-1760. The office can also direct you to the voicemail box that you need. You may leave a message by voice mail message or by writing a note in your child’s agenda. Please ask any questions that you need to. It is better to ask a silly question than to be confused or frustrated. I find that by sending me an email the lines of communication can be in a very efficient manner.
